The project focused on designing a transformative justice center within the existing building shell at 232 Lafayette St. in downtown Baton Rouge. The center included spaces dedicated to restorative justice practices, along with supporting programs that fostered healing, community-building, and accessibility. The design reimagined the adjacent south parking lot as an integrated element, incorporating options such as parking, landscaped areas, or a public plaza to enhance outdoor connectivity. Interior spaces incorporated thoughtful acoustical, natural, and artificial lighting strategies, while material choices and detailing for floors, walls, ceilings, and openings reinforced the project's purpose and atmosphere. Exterior modifications were allowed but required strong justification to align with the project's goals. Overall, the design prioritized physical and visual accessibility, ensuring clear and compliant circulation and egress pathways while creating an inclusive and restorative environment.
My design for the transformative justice center at 232 Lafayette St. focused on creating a space that mirrors the restorative justice process by guiding visitors through a sequence of spaces designed for reflection, healing, and reconciliation. The layout of the building was carefully organized to lead users on a journey that aligns with the stages of the restorative justice process—acknowledgment, dialogue, and resolution. Drawing inspiration from the calming and healing qualities of nature, I incorporated natural elements throughout the design. Spaces featured abundant natural light, biophilic materials such as wood and stone, and views of thoughtfully integrated landscaped areas. The adjacent south parking lot was transformed into a serene plaza with greenery, water features, and shaded seating to encourage moments of respite and connection. Inside, acoustical strategies ensured a peaceful atmosphere, while material choices for floors, walls, and ceilings emphasized tactile warmth and visual comfort. Each design decision worked to create an environment that felt restorative and grounding, guiding visitors through the center in a way that reflects the transformative journey toward healing and reconciliation.
